Countdown to Mo-time!

28 10 2008

It’s almost time to start Movember, but my donation rate is looking rather low, at just $35.00.

If anyone out there has even $2 to spare towards a very worthy cause, which can be claimed as a tax deduction if you’re a citizen of Australia, please donate.

No clean feed!

25 10 2008

For anyone well versed in mainstream media, you might not have heard much about the Australian Government’s plan to impose mandatory internet filtering at the ISP level. The plan, which seems to have bipartisan support from both sides of parliament, follows trials of ISP level filtering which proves that the proposed system will slow internet speeds, block legitimate sites in error, and still allow access to material that should have been filtered.

Rather than trust the parents of australia to ensure appropriate safeguards for their children, the government instead has chosen on an act of censorship which has greater implications than just net neutrality. While the government may claim that they are implementing this plan in the interest of protecting Australia’s children, their actions reek of censorship, particularly following their recent attempt to silence critics of the filter.

If  you aren’t already familiar with the plan, I suggest you check out the No Clean Feed web site, run by Electronic Frontiers Australia, and make up your own mind about the government’s plans.

Which way to Mo?

20 10 2008

I have a very important decision to make.

I’ll be honest, I’m scared, and confused. The variety of the contemporary mustache is just so daunting to the novice, and with the 1st of Movember fast approaching it’s time to talk about the all important aspect of style.

Movember 2007 was a time of great exploration in the field of facial hair. I initially tried the “Trucker”, finding it a rather bushy and traditional affair. However, after adorning it for a good 24 hours, I felt it was time to explore other options. The “Undercover Brother” showed great promise, that is until I got mistaken for an Actor while walking down Fyshwik way…

I finally settled on the “Business Man” for the greater part of the month. A simple, yet effective approach to modern facial hair, with the style and sophistication you can only find in your local QANTAS Club, or Kebab bar.

This year, I want my gentle readers to help decide what masterpiece of Mo should adorn my face. So while you reach for your Visa card or that scrap of paper where you wrote your Paypal password to throw a few dollars towards a great cause, consider the following style guide:

Now that you understand the significance of the decision at hand, please help, if not with your wallets then with your opinions, by voting in my Movember poll. The poll will help influence, if not completely make the decision around what shall adorn my face, and if you contribute to the cause your Mo-wishes just may come true!

Just incase you missed that donation URL, here it is again. Just remember, you’ll be helping out a fantastic cause, and if you’re in Australia, it’s tax deductable!

While you ponder the significance of this poll, I’ll leave you with these words of wisdom…

I’m growing the MO!

17 10 2008

During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I’m growing a Mo. That’s right I’m bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about tackling men’s health issues and being proactive in the fight against men’s depression and prostate cancer.

To donate to my Mo you can either:

  • Click this link and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account, or
  • Write a cheque payable to ‘Movember Foundation’, referencing my Registration Number 1422896 and mailing it to:

Movember Foundation, PO Box 292, Prahran VIC 3181

Remember, all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

The money raised by Movember is used to raise awareness of men’s health issues and donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative. The PCFA and beyondblue will use the funds to fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and depression.

Did you know:

Depression affects 1 in 6 men….most don’t seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide.

Last year in Australia 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of prostate cancer – equivalent to the number of women who will die from breast cancer annually.

For those that have supported Movember in previous years you can be very proud of the impact it has had and can check out the details at: [ Fundraising Outcomes ].

Thanks for your support. More information is available at http://www.movember.com/.
