The cost of being green

12 06 2008

This afternoon I thought I’d check out the new organic & environmentally conscious store As Nature Intended which opened near my apartment complex a few weeks ago. I went in there with the intention of completing my first ever fully organic and environmentally conscious grocery shop! You see, one of my new years resolutions was to improve the way I treat the environment. One way that we can help the environment is by being a smarter consumer – by ensuring that the choices we make in the store are environmentally conscious.

I have always tried to be a smarter consumer through mainstream shopping channels. It’s really quite simple, just look for locally made products contained in recyclable packaging, fresh fruit and vegetables from local sources, and avoid all manner of junk food! Also while you’re shopping, minimise the purchase of beef related products, and check out the environmental credentials of the products you’re buying if they’re visible on the packaging.

I thought by shopping at As Nature Intended I could up the ante somewhat, and further minimise the impact of my retail actions upon the environment. Unfortunately, what I found is it costs considerably more to be proactively green in this area. Sure, there’s things you can do when shopping that don’t need to cost you any more, but shopping at a specialist niche store really doesn’t appear to be the way to go. I only purchased 10 small items which I was running low on, but found that doing this quite quickly ate away at my food budget. Just how expensive was it? Well, here’s my experience.

The data below shows a comparison of the cost of purchasing organic and/or environmentally friendly products, when compared to equivalent products that I could have purchased at my local woolworths. Ten products were purchased, and below is the comparison of the cost per item of the product from As Nature Intended (displayed in blue), when compared to Woolworths Homeshop online* (displayed in green).

As you can see, the overall total shopping at As Nature Intended is substantially higher than Woolworths. This is just something I can’t afford at the moment, and is going to be a real blocker in shopping at this store in the future.

The following table provides a per-item comparison, just incase anyone wants to dispute my figures, or see what was purchased.

Unfortunately in this case, my conclusion is that shopping here is just not economically viable for me at this time. I am struggling a little financially (as anyone who reads my personal blog will know), and I just can’t afford a 38% increase in my shopping budget. This doesn’t mean I’m going to give up in trying to be more environmentally conscious, but unfortunately it does mean that I’m not going to be able to be as proactive in this space as I’d like to be.

Australia’s bright shining future?

6 06 2008

I’m in a ranting mood tonight, so bear with me.

So why is it so hard for the Australian Government to bite the bullet and invest in renewable, environmentally conscious technologies. What is it about this whole issue that makes it just so damned hard, or is it just human nature to take the easiest option?

I take issue with the fact that ACTEWAGL are actively planning a “Canberra Technology City” which includes technologies invented in the 1930’s! I find it laughable that the term “Technology” can be applied to any concept which includes on-site generation of power using natural gas turbines. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they’re not burning coal, but creating a new power solution based on a non-renewable fossil fuel, utilising a method which does have a relatively sizeable carbon footprint when compared to modern renewable power generation, and invented almost 80 years ago is just hypocritical, and quite frankly, moronic. But it really exemplifies the thought process that goes in to all planning in Australia. Renewable energy sources are just “too hard” for Australia.

I’m not going to debate climate change here, because quite frankly I’m sick of the debate and just want some action. Climate change aside, it’s no secret that Fossil Fuels are in finite supply, so why are we not evolving beyond our reliance upon them now that viable alternate technologies exist? Everybody is complaining about the cost of petrol, yet I don’t see any great push towards hybrid or electronic cars. Again, it’s all too hard for Australia, and it’s this attitude that is going to leave us behind.

Australia is a net importer of fuel products based on fossil fuels. We need to be more intelligent into the future. We need to realise the implications of tying ourselves to a source of power which is beyond our physical and economic control, and tap into the resources that we have on hand. And what are some of the most pleantiful resources available in Australia? Sun, and space. Let’s be more intelligence, more “technological” about our approach to future energy needs, and break our reliance on fossil fuels and importing from overseas markets, and build towards a more reliant and economically stable future.

How does this not make sense?

Do I have a solution for YOU!

4 06 2008

I can make, or break my own day within the first 30 minutes. Want to know how? Read on…

The curmudgeons at my work would have you believe that all your answers lie in the FISH! Philosophy. They have willingly spent a portion of public money in purchasing books, DVDs, and little stuffed fish critters used to drive this commercial ideology onto our staff – I’m sorry, but any ‘philosophy’ with that much merchandise is clearly just for commercial gain.

One of the key principles behind the FISH! philosophy, and one that is thrown around my workplace far too often, is that you need to “Choose your attitude”. It’s as if there is some magic switch which can be flicked in an instant, and the world immediately becomes a completely different place. By choosing your attitude, and denying your reality, you are suited to be a perfect corporate drone, totally devoid of human emotion and any manner of free or rebellious spirit. Atleast, that is what my work would have you believe.

However, not being one to be easily brainwashed, I believe in the Music reflects reality philosophy. There’s only one prerequisite;- that you must be a person who lives for, and by music. And here’s how it works!

Choose your attitude? No no no you have it all wrong. Choose your playlist! Grab your iPod, log onto your computer, or grab a CD – it’s time to put on some music. Everyone has a natural affinity with something that invokes a vast store of emotions, memories and feelings. For me, that’s music. I simply play a song the invokes those emotions – it can be the #1 song that received constant airplay at a highly positive time in your life, or it can be a song with lyrics which inspire you, or that you can relate to. Either way, you don’t need to spend $1000’s of dollars on self help books, DVDs, stuffed toys, or any other philosophy that someone wants to sell you – just find that trigger that will bring back postiive memories, and invoke it. Simple.

And if you can’t think of a song, well that’s easy. Just play something that makes you want to dance! And do it!

Meanwhile, the Australian taxpayer is out of pocket to cute little stuffed fish toys, and there’s a hole lot of staff forcing their mind to believe a false philosophy, ignoring the important thoughts going on in their head. Yep, that’s the public service for you. Oh, and while I’m ranting about commericialised philosophies, don’t get me started on Who Moved My Cheese?

Do you work in/for a government agency? Do you receive corporate brainwashing? Please, share through a comment below. Or am I really alone here.

A day, like any other

3 06 2008

“Scorecarding in Excel. God man, you must be mad! Why not write a blog entry instead!”

So here I sit, on this wonderful Tuesday night, once again contemplating my navel. I made the brave and bold decision to re-purchase MacJournal, so now in order to get my money’s worth I have to blog on a regular basis. Is this the rebirth of zombie jesus the Waynie blog? Only you, kind gentle reader, will be the bearer of that knowledge, in time… sweet merciful time.

Being a new blog, perhaps I should introduce myself? Or perhaps you should introduce yourself, after all, there is so much of me on the internet nowadays it seems that the dreaded Google spiders know what I’m thinking before even I. All you need to know can be found on the links to your right. What’s that gentle reader, you don’t want to click? Well then, there’s some things you shall never know, aren’t there.

Who I am aside, it’s what I am that I want to talk about today. Or rather, where I am. I find myself in a bizarre mindset of late. I’ve wondered if I’m going insane. I’ve also wondered if this is my body’s reaction to the events that surround me. Is there some primitive human instinct that is pumping the necessary chemicals through my body to throw myself slightly off balance, in a vain attempt to survive the horrific nature of my life? Or perhaps there’s some bug burrowing deep into my brain, espousing buggy wisdom into my once vacant cranium. Who can say. Can you, gentle reader? Can you?

I’m not sure where to begin, on this wonderful Tuesday night. Do I rant of the deplorable actions of CSA management? Shall I contemplate my very existence as I fear I head towards the surgeon’s knife? Shall I lament in a dark, poetic fashion of the absence of love, friendship, joy, and purpose in my life? Or shall I just wax lyrical about the inane, materialistic existence that seems to surround me. No, gental reader, I shall do none of the above. Instead, I shall continue typing in a random fashion, blurting the inner thoughts of the brain-bug onto this pixellated landscape.

I find it intriguing how I am more, yet so much less social of late. I’ve reverted to a pre-adult stage of living vicariously through my screen name. No dearest reader, this doesn’t mean I have a vivacious spread of erotic events on xtube.com (god knows I wouldn’t want to break the internets), but I do find myself opening up in the most safe, closed way possible. I think in my panic, I’ve retreated to what I know is safe. And this is quite contrary to one of my new years resolutions; to be more impulsive. In keeping with the fine tradition of breaking new years resolutions, I can certainly verify that this resolution suffered an untimely death, the victim of our quick fix society. Rest in peace, dear resolution. You held such promise, but it was never to be.

In the safety that I find behind this desk, I do find myself reaching out more to the world around me. What’s more interesting is the dark bird twitter – what an insight into the human mind. I suppose I shall call term this the ’Modern Ambiversion effect’ – the extroversion you find in isolation. What a perfect way to focus on self improvement – completely absolve myself of effort and surround myself with wonderful, kitsch people, living slightly askew off the mainstream, yet quite conformist in an appropriate way. How very… predictable of me.

So gentle reader, a small yet irrelevant insight into my mind. Interesting? Perhaps by now you are wondering what the purpose of this blog is. Am I going to analyse the current social trends, drawing conclusions so simply dismissed as just another rant? Shall I post images, video, and audio of the counter culture which is constantly at the tip of my consciousness, and but a mere RSS feed away? Or shall I find a niche in the overcrowded blogosphere, to carve myself a reputation as a subject matter expert? None of these will come to pass, yet at the same time, they all will. The interesting part about living in my head at this time is I don’t know who I’m going to be tomorrow. There are so many facets to my personality fighting for their moment in the sun, and they shall all have a post at one stage or another. No gentle reader, I fear this is just another personal blog, of interest to those who know me. or who may want to get to know me.

So please, sit back, stow your luggage in the overhead compartment, and lets see where this journey into my psyche takes us. Until another time…
